Throughout childhood, my family always talked about Great-Grandma Rose. She was a hard woman who came from the 'old country'...Czechoslovakia. I remember being shown pictures of her in her Midwestern farm house with a dish coming out of the oven, decked out in her dress and apron. This is a woman with a 3rd grade education, who was still able to read and write, that stopped at the 3rd grade to help support her family. Living in a country made up of so many diverse peoples, it's a story much of us can relate to.
I am fortunate in that I come from a family that has cherished its history, and the strong women and men that have shared their stories and recipes for the sake of family. Baking is something that has always come easily to me, and I think this history has something to do with that. Breads are my passion. They bring families, friends and strangers together. A good bread brings you home.
